The institution is part of the access route
Kanopy’s public-library route starts with a participating library and its credentials, alongside the Kanopy account process. A card’s validity at the library does not by itself establish that the institution participates in Kanopy or that the same collection is offered through another library.
Choose the intended institution before investigating a missing title. The collection and any borrowing arrangements belong to that library’s service. A friend finding a film under a different institution is not proof that the same film should be immediately available under yours.
Academic web access can work differently
Kanopy’s academic guidance describes a university or college access route that can allow viewing without creating a separate personal Kanopy account. A personal account can add functions, but the institution’s access path is still essential.
For a campus viewing problem, start from the institution’s genuine route and identify whether authentication succeeded. Do not replace an institutional login with public-library instructions simply because both screens carry the Kanopy name. The source of the entitlement matters.
Library verification has a distinct remedy
If a library asks you to verify again, use the legitimate credentials for that named institution. Kanopy’s account controls can show multiple libraries, and the default selection affects the collection you encounter first. Be deliberate about switching the library before comparing search results.
Keep the library card number and PIN private. A useful support message can state the institution, film title, whether the result says Request Access, the device and the visible error. That information distinguishes library verification, collection scope and actual playback without exposing the credential itself.
Questions answered
Does every library card provide Kanopy access?
No. The library must participate.
Is every academic search result ready to play?
