Decide which language assistance you need

S4C’s Welsh-language programmes can serve different households in different ways. Someone following spoken Welsh with English text has a different need from a learner who wants Welsh subtitles. Spoken audio description adds visual context; it is not a translation of the dialogue.

Begin with the programme and the required access service. Do not assume that a single subtitle switch creates all of those versions. Look for the relevant label in the listing and playback controls, and use the version that matches the viewer’s actual need.

Signing is a separate visual service

S4C provides signed content as well as subtitling and audio description. A signed programme is a particular presentation of the work, not simply another name for subtitles. The access-services page helps distinguish the available routes.

If a household needs signing for a particular programme, find the signed version or listing rather than relying on the ordinary episode to gain it after playback begins. Keep the programme title, episode and version in any question about availability.

International Clic is a programme selection

S4C’s international offer makes selected on-demand programmes available after free registration. This is useful for Welsh speakers and learners abroad, but it should not be expanded into a claim that the entire UK live schedule follows every viewer everywhere.

Use the international selection for a specific programme or boxset. A programme being familiar from the linear channel is not enough to establish that it is in the current overseas collection. The account’s successful registration and the item’s actual availability are separate checks.

Compare live, replay and the accessible version

A live broadcast, an ordinary replay and a selected accessible edition can have different controls and availability. For example, finding a title in the normal programme list does not settle whether the particular episode currently has English subtitles or a signed edition.

When reporting an issue, name the actual version selected and say whether the problem is a missing option, incorrect language, timing or playback failure. If the accessible version is present but will not start, include the device and error. Those details make the question more precise than saying only that S4C is not working.

Questions answered
