SBS On Demand: account access, captions and audio description

The free Australian service distinguishes programme tracks, supported surfaces and geographic availability.

A free account is still an account requirement

SBS On Demand describes free access through an account using a valid email address. Registration and payment are different concepts: asking a viewer to sign in is not by itself an offer that must be purchased.

Use the genuine broadcaster destination and intended account. When more than one person uses a shared television, establish which account is active before comparing saved viewing information with a phone or browser.

The service is streaming-only in Australia

SBS’s current help states that streaming is available within Australia and does not offer personal offline downloads. An Australian citizenship or an account created at home does not automatically provide overseas playback.

Before planning a journey, do not treat a watchlist as downloaded media or copy another service’s offline instructions. An item stored as a preference and a locally playable video are different resources.

Captions and audio description have their own labels

Programmes carrying closed captions are identified with CC information. Audio description is a separate audio track available on selected material and supported surfaces. A film having ordinary subtitles does not establish that it also has audio description.

Use the programme page and actual player controls to choose the required track. The service also provides language filters for supported interfaces. Keep the track and episode with a report about an absent or incorrect option.

A supported app does not make every access track universal

The audio-description help distinguishes supported platforms and selected programmes. A general app installation is therefore not a complete test of the accessible version needed by a particular viewer.

For help, name the programme, CC or AD requirement, device and precise result. Keep region restrictions separate from a selected track malfunctioning. This gives a clearer enquiry than assuming that one language or access-service label applies to the whole catalogue.

Questions answered

Can a watchlist be used as an offline download?

No. SBS describes On Demand as streaming-only.

Does a programme with captions necessarily also offer audio description?

No. Inspect the actual CC and AD labels and supported playback surface.
