AFC Champions League Elite

Thirty-two clubs are divided into two regional leagues

The amended AFC Champions League Elite 2026/27 regulations specify thirty-two league-stage clubs. They are divided into a West league of sixteen and an East league of sixteen. The competition therefore does not rank every participating club in one universal league-stage table.

Keep the region with a standings screenshot. An East club’s place is assessed within the East league, and a West club’s place within the West league. Comparing two position numbers from separate regions does not create a head-to-head fixture or a single combined qualification boundary.

Sixteen in the league does not mean fifteen opponents

Each club plays eight different opponents within its own region, with four home fixtures and four away fixtures. Clubs from the same member association do not meet at this stage. The expanded field has not turned the league stage into a complete round robin against all fifteen other regional participants.

For a viewing shortlist, start with the club’s actual eight opponents. Two clubs close together in the table may never face one another during the league stage. A supposed missing meeting may simply be outside the assigned programme, rather than a postponed match or an incomplete television listing.

As a hypothetical example, a club with eight league-stage appointments has completed its assigned programme after the eighth, even though seven other clubs in its regional table were never opponents. Table membership and a team’s fixture list serve different purposes.

The top eight move into a regional round of sixteen

J.LEAGUE’s official competition overview confirms that the first eight clubs from each regional league advance. The round of sixteen then pairs clubs within the same region according to their finishing positions, with first against eighth, second against seventh, third against sixth and fourth against fifth.

Those ties are home and away, with the lower-ranked club hosting first and the higher-ranked club hosting second. Recordings need their leg number. A league-stage win over a familiar opponent is a separate fixture and must not be substituted for one of the two knockout meetings.

The centralised Finals are a later, different appointment

After the round of sixteen, the competition moves to a centralised Finals comprising quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. The quarter-final winners are decided in single-match knockout ties, rather than a return visit to each opponent’s home ground. The phase label changes what a complete tie recording means.

Check the AFC’s current match notice for the selected fixture, venue and date. The official overview lists East-region matchdays separately, so do not copy that schedule indiscriminately to a West club. Keep Elite in the competition name: AFC Champions League Two has its own field and programme.
