Australian football scores: goals, behinds and the total

A score written 10.6 (66) is arithmetic, not a decimal or a score from another football code.

Goals and behinds have different values

Australian football awards six points for a goal and one for a behind. The scoreboard can show both counts alongside the total. The final total, rather than simply the number of goals, determines which side has scored more.

A familiar notation is goals.behinds followed by total points in brackets. A hypothetical 10.6 (66) means ten goals and six behinds: ten multiplied by six, plus six, equals sixty-six. It is not ten point six points.

A team with fewer goals can still lead

Behind totals can outweigh a small deficit in goals. For example, a hypothetical side at 8.15 has sixty-three points. An opponent at 10.2 has sixty-two. The side with eight goals is ahead by one point despite having scored two fewer goals.

This is why a graphic showing only the goal count can mislead a newcomer. Read the bracketed total or calculate six times goals plus behinds before judging the margin. The components also explain how the total was built.

The posts help distinguish the two scores

The ground has central goalposts and smaller outer behind posts. A legal goal requires the relevant kick through the central goal area; a ball passing through a behind area scores a point. Touches and contact with a goalpost can also affect the scoring decision.

The umpire’s ruling matters. Do not count six merely because the ball appears to pass near the central posts on one camera angle. An official score decision and any applicable review establish the recorded score.

A six-point swing is one goal, not six scoring actions

When commentary says a side needs a goal to take the lead, compare the actual margin. A team trailing by five moves one ahead with an additional six-point goal, assuming no intervening score. A team trailing by six draws level with that goal.

These are hypothetical arithmetic examples. They do not forecast the next passage of play or determine whether a particular late attempt is valid. Time remaining, the controlling umpire and the competition’s end-of-period rules still matter.

Australian football is a distinct code

AFL competition is Australian football, with its own field, scoring and laws. It should not be confused with association football, American football or rugby merely because all use an oval or football label in some context.

Retain the code and competition when comparing scores. A six-point goal here is unrelated to a touchdown calculation in the NFL. For a detailed interpretation or a modified local format, use the applicable laws and competition conditions rather than transferring a rule from another sport.
