Competition identity

EFL Cup and Carabao Cup identify the same competition
Carabao Cup is the sponsored name of the EFL Cup. It is a knockout competition involving EFL and Premier League clubs, separate from those clubs’ league campaigns and from the FA Cup. A sponsored name should be retained as an alias rather than used to invent another unrelated tournament.
The same two clubs can meet in the league and in a cup. The competition label tells you whether the result changes a league table or decides progress in the knockout event.
Clubs do not all begin in the same round
The EFL’s competition explanation describes different entry points for clubs. The exact season can also require adjustments. Its August 2026 key-information notice explains a preliminary round for 2026/27 and why the number of Premier League clubs in European competition affected the arrangement.
Do not assume a club missing from Round One has been eliminated or has withdrawn. It may not enter until a later stage. Use the actual season’s draw and regulations before describing the route of a particular club.
The semi-final is not one ordinary cup night
The competition’s semi-finals are played over two legs. That creates a tie result in addition to each match result. A club can win one leg but lose the combined contest, while a level first leg does not settle who reaches the final.
A hypothetical first leg ending 2–1 and return leg ending 0–1 leave the aggregate level. The relevant cup rules determine the next deciding procedure. Do not silently import an old away-goals rule or a rule from another domestic competition.
The final is a separate deciding match
The final at Wembley is the competition’s concluding match. It is not another league match or a third leg of the semi-final. Keep that change in structure in mind when locating a replay or following a club’s route.
A semi-final first-leg highlight and the final can carry the same cup branding while showing very different competitive stages. The club names, season and round distinguish them more reliably than the sponsor logo alone.
Season-specific eligibility can change
The EFL’s 2026/27 notice also explains changes concerning players who move clubs during the winter window and the treatment of loan-player eligibility. A player’s appearance for one side earlier in the competition should not be used to make a universal claim about eligibility without reading the relevant season’s rules.
For ordinary viewing, the published team sheet tells you who is actually selected. For a rules question, consult the current EFL document rather than judging from an older cup-tied explanation. This keeps a practical guide accurate without speculating about a specific transfer or selection.
