Competition identity

Start with the season ending in 2027
The EFL approved an expansion of the Championship play-offs from four participating clubs to six, beginning with 2026/27. A recording of the May 2026 play-offs therefore belongs to the preceding season. Keep the season with the competition when searching; a current upload date does not change the rules under which an old match was played.
The distinction matters when reading the end-of-season table. A four-team play-off diagram from an earlier campaign is not a reliable picture of the expanded field. Use the applicable 2026/27 EFL play-off information alongside the completed standings, rather than carrying an older qualification graphic forward.
Eliminators and semi-finals are different stages
The EFL’s expansion announcement describes two eliminator ties whose winners progress to the semi-finals against the clubs finishing third and fourth. A club appearing in an eliminator has an additional hurdle before the semi-final stage. The word play-off can describe either stage, so retain eliminator or semi-final in a programme request.
The announcement also states that the semi-finals are played over two legs. A first-leg result is one part of a tie rather than confirmation that its winner has reached Wembley. When choosing the return match, include both clubs and second leg so an earlier meeting does not replace the decisive programme.
Seven fixtures do not mean seven separate ties
The expanded Championship play-offs contain seven fixtures. The two semi-final ties account for four individual matches, and the final accounts for one more. That leaves the two eliminator fixtures. Counting matches and counting ties answer different questions; the same pair of semi-finalists contributes two entries to a fixture calendar.
For an archive shortlist, label the stage before arranging the recordings in sequence. Two first legs followed by two second legs belong to the semi-finals, not four separate semi-final ties. This simple distinction prevents an abbreviated highlights collection from being mistaken for a complete record of the play-off programme.
When logging results, use one row per fixture and a shared tie label for the two semi-final legs. That preserves the seven-match programme without losing which results belong together.
Use the fixture notice for the actual appointment
The EFL’s key-date page puts the 2026/27 Championship closing league weekend on 1 May 2027. That is the end of the league schedule, not the play-off final itself. A season calendar and a specific play-off appointment provide different levels of detail.
Retain the confirmed stage, teams, date and stated kick-off location when the fixtures are published. An old Wembley final recording or a May 2026 schedule is useful history, but it cannot establish the 2027 television slot. Check the named broadcaster’s current programme notice separately for the selected match and viewing territory.
Questions answered
Does the expanded format apply to the May 2026 recordings?
No. The EFL change begins with 2026/27; the season must stay attached to the match.
Are two semi-final legs two different ties?
No. They are two fixtures contributing to one tie between the same clubs.
