Competition identity

A tied score needs the round as well as the cup name
For the 2026/27 men’s Coupe de France, the FFF’s match-duration rule separates the final from the preceding rounds. From the first round through the semi-finals, a draw after normal time leads to a penalty shoot-out. A viewer should not automatically expect another thirty minutes of football in those rounds.
The final follows a different sequence: thirty minutes of extra time if the score is level after normal time, then penalties if it remains level. Keep final in the programme label. A semi-final and a final can involve the same clubs while needing different expectations about how the evening may finish.
Added time and extra time mean different things
Normal time is ninety minutes divided into two halves. Added time displayed at the end of a half remains part of that normal-time period. Seeing the clock move beyond ninety minutes is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the match has entered an extra-time period.
In a hypothetical tied quarter-final, the referee can allow several minutes for stoppages and then end normal time. The 2026/27 rule takes that tied match to penalties. In a tied final, the separate extra-time stage is available instead. This is an explanatory example, not a prediction of a particular match result.
If a replay title ends with penalties, check its duration and description. It may contain only the shoot-out, leaving the ninety-minute match in another recording.
Early regional instructions apply to the named competition
The FFF delegates organisation of the first six rounds to the regional leagues. Grand Est’s current Coupe de France reminder explicitly describes two forty-five-minute halves and penalties without extra time. That local match information belongs to this cup and season; another regional or youth competition can have different instructions.
Keep the category precise when opening a draw or recording. The FFF publishes separate documents for the men’s Coupe de France, the women’s cup, Gambardella and other competitions. A broad French cup search can mix those events. The teams and exact competition title should agree with the selected round.
A draw broadcast is not the match programme
Grand Est’s national-round notice records the 2026/27 seventh- and eighth-round draw on 28 October. That presentation determines pairings; it is a different programme from the resulting cup matches. An archived draw can help identify an opponent without providing any complete match video.
For a viewing appointment, retain the published match date, home and away clubs, round and current programme notice. If a listing includes penalties, inspect whether it is the shoot-out alone or the full match. A short decisive sequence does not provide the normal-time action that preceded it.
Questions answered
Does every tied Coupe de France match have extra time?
No. In the 2026/27 men’s cup, the final has the extra-time exception; earlier rounds go to penalties after a tied normal-time result.
Is time added after ninety minutes automatically extra time?
No. Stoppage allowance remains normal time; the separately prescribed extra-time periods are a different stage.
