European knockout football: the match score and the tie

Read a two-leg aggregate, understand extra time and keep the shoot-out result separate from the match score.

A cup tie is not a league fixture

A match can be won while a tie is lost

In a two-leg tie, the teams play a match at each venue and their goals across both matches determine the aggregate. Winning the second match does not automatically mean progressing. The result of the first leg is still part of the calculation.

For a hypothetical example, Club A wins the first leg 2–0. Club B then wins the second 1–0. Club B won that evening’s match, while Club A won the tie 2–1 overall. Commentary can correctly describe both outcomes if it says which one it means.

Do not bring back the old away-goals rule

UEFA removed the away-goals rule from its club competitions from 2021/22. A current UEFA tie level on aggregate is not settled by giving extra weight to the goals scored away. An older highlight can show a team progressing under a rule that no longer applies to the current competition.

Suppose the first match ends 1–0 and the reverse match ends 2–1 to the other club. The aggregate is 2–2. Counting which team scored away does not decide a present UEFA club tie. This is why the edition matters when comparing an old result with a new match.

Extra time belongs at the end of the deciding match

The 2026/27 Champions League regulations provide two 15-minute periods of extra time when the aggregate is level after the second leg. If the teams remain level after extra time, a penalty shoot-out decides who advances. The first leg does not normally continue into extra time simply because its score is level.

A final is a separate match format rather than the second half of a two-leg tie. Competition rules specify how a winner is found there. Likewise, a domestic cup may use a different procedure. The IFAB Laws allow specified methods; they do not make every competition use the same combination.

A shoot-out is a separate deciding process

Penalty kicks used in a shoot-out take place after the match has ended. Keep the match score, aggregate score and shoot-out score in separate fields. Adding shoot-out kicks to the ordinary match goals produces a misleading result.

A hypothetical listing might show a match at 1–1 and a shoot-out at 4–3. That does not mean the match finished 5–4. If you are looking for the full deciding sequence, choose a programme that includes the post-match shoot-out rather than assuming a ninety-minute highlights package contains it.

Leave room beyond the listed regulation period

The playing clock is not a reliable appointment for the exact end of a knockout programme. Stoppage time, extra time and the deciding kicks can extend the evening. A broadcaster’s programme window is a scheduling choice, while the competition determines how the contest is completed.

For a recording or replay request, include the season, round and leg. If the key moment was in extra time or the shoot-out, say so. This identifies the part of the contest you need without making an unsupported promise about a particular service’s recording length.

Do away goals decide current UEFA club ties?

No. UEFA abolished that rule from 2021/22.

Can a second-leg winner be eliminated?

Yes. The other team can still have more goals on aggregate.

Are shoot-out kicks added to the match score?

No. Record the deciding shoot-out separately.
