A playoff place is different from automatic relegation
Ligue 1’s published 2026/27 explanation gives its sixteenth-place club a two-leg tie against the winner of the Ligue 2 playoffs. The final regular-season position therefore supplies a playoff participant, rather than a completed relegation outcome.
From the other side, winning the relevant Ligue 2 playoff route earns the chance to face the top-flight club. It should not be described as automatic promotion before that further contest has been decided.
Portugal uses the second division’s third-placed side
Liga Portugal’s 2026/27 announcement pairs sixteenth in the top flight with third in Liga Portugal 2. Its published arrangement has the second-division club host the first leg and the top-flight side host the return.
The contrast with France is the route of the opponent. Do not replace France’s Ligue 2 playoff winner with a simple third-place rule merely because the top-flight position and two-leg language look familiar. A similar bracket shape can begin with different qualification conditions.
Aggregate goals decide the Portuguese tie
Liga Portugal explains that the goals from both legs are combined. If the aggregate remains level after regulation in the return, its announced procedure uses thirty minutes of extra time, then penalties if required. Those are the Portuguese contest’s rules; this passage does not claim every French deciding detail is identical.
For a hypothetical Portuguese example, the lower-division club wins 2–0 at home and loses the return 1–0. It still leads 2–1 overall. Calling the return-leg winner the promoted or surviving club would ignore the first match.
One tie has two perspectives
The top-flight club calls the contest a survival opportunity, while the second-division side pursues promotion. These are descriptions of the same place being contested, not two separate playoff competitions to be added to a calendar.
For a hypothetical pair of clubs, whichever side wins the complete tie takes the top-flight place under the applicable rules. The other does not receive a separate consolation promotion merely because it won one leg.
Use a completed league table before naming participants
The official announcements describe positions and progression. They do not establish which clubs will occupy those positions at the end of a season still being played. A projected table can change as games finish.
For the actual outcome, combine the final league classification with the official playoff result. Keep the country and season beside the rules, especially when comparing an archived French tie with a current Portuguese one. This guide explains the route without inventing future clubs, fixtures or viewing access.
