Handball’s empty goal: count the goalkeeper inside the seven

Understand how a handball team can field seven court players without exceeding the on-court limit.

Saved marks, current questions

The seven-player limit includes the goalkeeper

IHF’s indoor rules dated 1 July 2025 allow no more than seven players per team on court. Rule 4:1 also permits a team playing without a goalkeeper to use up to seven court players. The extra attacker is a change in the composition of that seven, rather than permission to add an eighth player.

For an original count, six court players plus one goalkeeper equals seven. Seven court players plus no goalkeeper also equals seven. Comparing only the outfield players makes the second formation look like an unexplained increase. Including the goalkeeper in the ledger shows the exchange that produces it.

Seven against six describes the court-player comparison

The IHF clarification discusses empty-goal seven-against-six situations. That phrase can compare the attacking court players with the defending court players while the defenders still have their own goalkeeper. It is not necessarily saying that the opponents have only six people in total on court.

Imagine A attacks with seven court players and B defends with six court players plus a goalkeeper. Both teams have seven people participating. A has an additional court attacker, but its own goal lacks a goalkeeper. This explains the visual pattern without assuming a suspension or an illegal numerical advantage.

The exchange still follows substitution procedure

Rule 4:4 requires the replaced player to have left before the substitute enters, with players using their own substitution line. It expressly applies these requirements to goalkeeper exchanges. A tactical purpose does not remove the substitution conditions.

When following a wide camera view, separate the sequence into departure, entry and the next phase of play. An edited close-up may omit the exchange entirely. In that case the visible empty goal establishes the formation in that shot; it does not establish whether every step of an unseen substitution was performed correctly. The officials’ decision supplies that separate judgment.

Formation and disciplinary numbers need separate notes

A numerical graphic can refer to court attackers, total participants or players unavailable through a suspension. Those are different counts. An original viewing note might read “seven court attackers, empty goal” rather than simply “extra player”. The longer phrase explains where the additional court role came from.

The IHF text also discusses six-against-six and other empty-goal situations, so empty goal is not synonymous with one fixed personnel picture. Read the active formation and any suspension display together. This guide explains how to count what is visible; it does not recommend a tactic, claim that the exchange guarantees a scoring advantage or attempt to adjudicate a substitution from an incomplete replay.
