Use the dated 13-club confirmation for this edition

AIFF’s 19 August 2026 announcement confirms that the Indian Super League 2026/27 will proceed with 13 participating clubs in a double round robin on a home-and-away basis. This is the season-specific reference to use when an earlier planning article or general competition description mentions a different number.

The July planning announcement described invitations to 14 clubs; an invitation count is not the same thing as the subsequently confirmed field. Keep the date beside each source when comparing them. The federation’s general overview also retains older wording, so use the explicit edition and later confirmation to identify the season you are following.

Double round robin explains repeated opponents

In a 13-club double round robin, each club has 12 opponents and meets each twice, once at home and once away. The resulting arithmetic is 24 scheduled league matches per club. This calculation explains the announced format; it is not a report of completed matches or a guarantee that a particular day’s fixture remains unchanged.

A second meeting between the same clubs is therefore expected. Keep the home team, venue and date when identifying a programme or recording. With an odd number of clubs, every club cannot play simultaneously against another league participant in one complete round. A blank date in one club’s calendar does not by itself show that it has been eliminated.

The fixture calendar answers the date and venue question

AIFF links its ISL competition page to the federation calendar, where fixtures are organised by competition and season. Match both team names, the date, start time and venue in that selected edition. If the calendar has not populated, return to the competition selection or the applicable announcement; an empty interface is not a completed sporting result.

The calendar itself notes that dates may change. Set a reminder only after checking the particular entry, and retain Asia/Kolkata when converting an India-origin time. A broadcast programme can start with studio coverage before kickoff, so preserve which time the listing describes rather than treating programme start and match start as interchangeable.

An ISL club’s other fixtures belong to other competitions

AIFF’s July planning statement said the league calendar would account for international windows and AFC club schedules. A club can therefore appear in another competition while its ISL calendar pauses. Retain the tournament field when following the same club across domestic league, cup and continental matches.

That planning statement also discussed commercial arrangements and the process of securing a broadcast partner. Use the current programme-specific viewing notice for the intended season and location; a dated commercial planning report does not identify every later broadcast. Keep live match, replay and highlights requests distinct, and avoid importing a previous season’s playoff or title procedure into this home-and-away explanation.

Questions answered

Is the July invitation to 14 clubs the confirmed 2026/27 field?

No. The later AIFF announcement confirms 13 participating clubs for the edition.

How many league matches does the announced double round robin imply per club?

Twelve opponents played twice gives 24 scheduled matches. This is format arithmetic, not a completed-results count.

Does an ISL club’s continental match count as an ISL fixture?

No. Keep the competition label as well as the club names and date.
