Competition identity

Points establish the first comparison
The RFEF’s 2026/27 First Division rules provide twenty clubs, thirty-eight rounds and three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. The table ranks the season’s accumulated results.
When points are equal, a tie-break rule becomes necessary. It is unsafe to assume that the next number on a familiar table is always the deciding one. Different competitions prioritize different comparisons.
For two clubs, start with their matches against each other
Article 10 places the goal difference in the two tied clubs’ head-to-head games before overall league goal difference. Overall difference, total goals and the further published criteria follow if needed.
Imagine Club A and Club B finish level on points. A wins their first meeting 2–0, while B wins the return 1–0. A has the better head-to-head goal difference by 2–1. A worse overall goal difference elsewhere would not overturn that first deciding comparison.
A multi-club tie needs a mini-table
For more than two tied clubs, the first comparison uses points earned in the games among those clubs, as if the others were absent. The regulations then provide further criteria for unresolved positions.
A hypothetical three-club group can therefore require all their mutual results. Selecting only the last game between two of them leaves out part of the required evidence. Build the relevant mini-table before deciding whether the next criterion is needed.
Do not transfer the Premier League’s order
The Premier League’s published explanation starts with overall goal difference for equal points, followed by goals scored and further conditions. LaLiga’s two-club head-to-head priority can therefore produce a different order from an English-style calculation.
For a hypothetical comparison, A and B both finish on sixty points. A has plus-ten overall difference and B plus-twenty, but A leads the Spanish head-to-head comparison. The overall figures alone do not justify placing B higher under the cited LaLiga rule.
A provisional table is not the completed tie-break decision
Article 10 addresses equality in the final classification. During the season, an official live table can present a temporary order before all mutual fixtures have been played. Keep the completed head-to-head record and the table’s status in view.
For a decisive calculation, use the full 2026/27 rules and official results. This guide does not shorten the entire multi-team procedure into a slogan or infer European qualification from one table position; those consequences have their own current allocation rules.
Questions answered
Does overall goal difference always decide a two-club LaLiga tie first?
No. The cited rules first compare goal difference in their head-to-head matches.
Can I use just one pair’s last match for a three-team tie?
No. A multi-club tie begins with the relevant mini-table.
Should I use an English league’s tie-break order?
No. Use the rules of the competition being ranked.
