Competition identity

The youth tournament has its own structure
The 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores Sub20 field contained twelve clubs in three groups of four. It is a youth club tournament, distinct from the senior Libertadores and from national-team under-twenty competitions.
The shared Libertadores name does not import the senior competition’s complete calendar, qualification route or group-transfer system. Use the Sub20 regulations and edition when reading its tables.
Four semifinal places come from three groups
The three group winners advanced, joined by the best runner-up across the groups. That makes four semifinalists. It does not create six places for every group’s top two.
A hypothetical second-placed club therefore needs another comparison after its own group position is established. Merely finishing second is not enough to announce semifinal qualification. The cross-group ranking criteria and all completed results establish the best runner-up.
A group position and a cross-group comparison are different steps
First identify where each club finished in its own group. Then compare the eligible runners-up under the tournament regulations. Do not take a third-placed club with a visually attractive statistic and insert it into a runners-up comparison.
For a hypothetical points illustration, the three runners-up finish with six, five and four points. The first has the strongest points total. If points are equal, further regulations are needed; a familiar domestic goal-difference rule should not be guessed in place of the youth tournament’s actual criteria.
The final phase is single-round competition
The AFA’s official draw explanation describes the group phase and final phase, including semifinals, third-place match and final, with single-round matches. A reader should not expect a home-and-away return leg merely because senior continental ties often have one.
A hypothetical semifinal victory puts the team in the title final; a defeat sends it towards the third-place contest described by the format. The match’s stage explains why a beaten semifinalist can still appear again.
Treat the 2026 edition as historical
The 2026 tournament was held in March. As of November 2026 it is an archived edition, not a set of upcoming fixtures. A preserved draw announcement explains the planned field and structure but should not be advertised as live scheduling.
For a replay or statistical comparison, retain the youth category, year and round. The official result establishes the outcome. This guide explains the qualification logic without inventing a current broadcast provider, a later edition’s entrants or a senior-team meaning for a youth result.
