MLS Cup Playoffs: a series is not an aggregate tie

Wild Cards, a best-of-three opening round and single-match later stages require different ways to read the score.

Qualification begins within the conference

The published 2026 MLS guidelines distinguish the two conferences. Their top seven seeds enter Round One directly, while seeds eight and nine contest a Wild Card match for the remaining place. A club’s conference position therefore matters when interpreting the playoff route.

Do not turn an overall combined table into an invented first-round pairing. The competition guidelines specify the actual conference-based qualification and matchups. The name of the stage is part of the fixture, not a decorative label.

The Wild Card is one deciding match

The 2026 rules describe a single-game Wild Card hosted by the higher seed. A draw after regulation goes to a shoot-out rather than extra time. This is a different procedure from a European two-leg knockout tie.

For viewing, a Wild Card replay needs the full deciding sequence if the score was level at the end of regulation. A highlights description that ends at ninety minutes may not explain which club advanced.

Round One counts wins across a best-of-three series

Each Round One game produces a winner. The first team to win two games advances. MLS does not decide this round by adding all goals across a home-and-away aggregate. A tied game after regulation is settled by a shoot-out under the published format.

Consider a hypothetical side winning the first match 1–0 but losing the second 4–0. The series is one win each, not an aggregate elimination at 4–1. A third match is required because neither side has yet won twice. The size of the second result does not count as more than one series victory.

The third game is conditional

The higher seed hosts the first game and, if needed, the third; the other side hosts the second. A club that wins the first two games has already reached two wins, so a third match is unnecessary. A programme guide can list a provisional third-game window without proving that game will actually occur.

Use the official series result before planning around a conditional fixture. This is a concrete reason to keep confirmed matches separate from if-needed entries in a personal viewing list.

Read later rounds by their own procedure

The competition changes structure after Round One. Do not carry the best-of-three expectation into every later playoff fixture or assume the regular-season treatment of a draw applies unchanged. The stage-specific part of the guidelines governs the contest.

For a replay request, include MLS Cup Playoffs, the year, the round and the series game number where applicable. That identifies the actual match without confusing it with an earlier regular-season meeting between the same clubs.
