Use the 2026 championship rules
NASCAR announced a return to the Chase for 2026. In the Cup Series, the top sixteen in points after the twenty-six-race regular season enter a ten-race postseason. The previous elimination-style Championship 4 explanation is historical rather than the current way to decide the title.
This is more than a change of event branding. It changes what a late-season result means. A driver is not removed from the title contest at the end of a three-race elimination round under the published 2026 Chase structure.
A win does not automatically qualify a driver
NASCAR explicitly removes win-and-in qualification. Places are determined by regular-season points. Winning remains valuable, with fifty-five finishing points for a race win, but an isolated victory is not an automatic postseason invitation.
The difference matters when reading a headline about a first-time winner. Celebrate the race result, then check the points position before calling that driver a confirmed Chase qualifier. A race victory and qualification are distinct claims.
There is one reseed, with an advantage for the regular-season leader
The sixteen qualifiers receive reseeded totals once, at the start of the Chase. The regular-season champion begins on 2,100, second on 2,075 and third on 2,065, followed by the published descending scale.
A hypothetical twenty-five-point opening gap is an advantage carried into the postseason, not a statement that the leader has already won it. Subsequent race and stage points can change the gap. Do not add the unreseeded regular-season totals again as if they remain a second separate bank.
The ten-race total determines the champion
The Chase has no eliminations. The eligible driver with the most points after the season finale becomes champion. Winning the final race is therefore not by itself the same as winning the championship.
For a hypothetical arithmetic example, a driver entering the finale twenty points ahead and losing ten points to a rival across that event would still be ten ahead, before any further official adjustments. The actual title calculation needs all applicable scoring and official results, rather than one finishing position viewed alone.
Other NASCAR series have different field sizes and race counts
The announcement also covers the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and Craftsman Truck Series, but their Chase fields and postseason lengths differ from Cup. Do not copy sixteen drivers and ten races onto every NASCAR programme.
When following an archived season, retain the year as well as the series. A 2025 elimination graphic can be accurate for its own event while teaching the wrong procedure for 2026. This guide explains the published change without predicting a champion or presenting historical race times as upcoming.
