Competition identity

League A has the route to the title
The 2026/27 Nations League has national teams arranged in Leagues A, B, C and D. League letters describe levels within this competition, not domestic club divisions. A result in a lower league is still a Nations League result, but it does not enter the League A championship quarter-finals.
The four League A group winners and four runners-up advance to those quarter-finals. Finishing second in a League A group therefore remains a route towards the title; it is not immediate elimination from the championship contest.
Quarter-finals are two-leg ties
UEFA seeds the League A group winners against runners-up from other groups. The runners-up host the first legs, and aggregate goals across the two matches determine the advancing side, with Article 18 governing a level tie.
For a hypothetical pair of results, a 2–0 first-leg win followed by a 1–0 second-leg defeat still gives the first team a 2–1 aggregate advantage. The result of one evening and the outcome of the quarter-final are different records.
The finals change to single-match contests
The four quarter-final winners reach the finals. The semi-finals, third-place match and final are single-leg games under the current regulations. The winner of the final becomes Nations League champion.
Do not expect a return leg after a semifinal merely because the preceding quarter-final had one. The stage changes the structure. Likewise, winning the third-place match and winning the final are distinct outcomes, even though both occur in the concluding event.
Promotion play-offs answer a different question
The League A/B and League B/C play-offs concern places in the league structure, rather than a place in the championship final. A listing containing play-off therefore needs its full stage label. It is not automatically one of the title quarter-finals.
UEFA’s updated explanation also announces a three-league structure for 2028/29, with eighteen teams per league. As a result, the 2026/27 movement rules are specially arranged for that transition. An older generic promotion chart should not be copied as the current route.
Keep future competition consequences distinct
A Nations League result can have implications beyond that evening, but EURO qualification has its own regulations and confirmed pathways. Do not label every Nations League victory as direct qualification for another finals tournament.
Use the official table for the group position, the relevant tie result for advancement and the published access rules for the next edition. These three records answer different questions. This guide explains the checked format without naming unconfirmed future participants or reproducing provisional match times.
