NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament — March Madness

The expansion begins with the 2027 tournaments

The NCAA confirms that both Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships expand from sixty-eight to seventy-six teams beginning in 2027. In season language, this is the championship following the 2026/27 college season. It does not retroactively change the completed 2026 tournament.

A guide can correctly describe sixty-eight for the older edition and seventy-six for the announced new edition. The year explains the apparent disagreement. Do not use an undated tournament-size answer when discussing this transition.

The First Four becomes a larger Opening Round

The new field includes twenty-four teams playing twelve Opening Round games. Those games reduce the total field by twelve, from seventy-six to sixty-four. The remaining fifty-two teams do not need an Opening Round victory to enter the main First Round.

This arithmetic resolves a common question: seventy-six teams does not mean the entire next round has seventy-six teams playing simultaneously. The preliminary games establish the familiar sixty-four-team bracket.

Opening Round teams come from two selection categories

The NCAA identifies the twelve lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and twelve lowest-seeded at-large teams for the Opening Round. Its explanation states that automatic qualifiers face other automatic qualifiers, and at-large teams face other at-large selections at this stage.

An automatic qualifier and an at-large selection describe routes into the field, not different scoring rules during the game. The official selection and bracket establish which team has which place. A regular-season ranking alone is not a substitute for that bracket.

The main bracket remains single elimination

After the Opening Round, the First Round, Second Round, regionals, Final Four and national championship retain their single-elimination structure. A defeat ends that team’s tournament; there is no best-of-seven recovery series.

For a hypothetical team entering directly into the sixty-four-team First Round, six consecutive wins reach the title: 64 to 32, 16, eight, four, two and then one champion. A team beginning in the Opening Round needs one additional win. This is a route calculation, not a prediction about any selected team.

Keep the men’s and women’s brackets distinct

The expansion applies to both championships, but they have separate brackets and published arrangements for their opening games. A shared March Madness name does not merge their fields, venues or results.

The NCAA’s expansion explanation leaves some implementation information to later announcements. Use the current official bracket and event schedule for actual participants, locations and programme times. This guide explains the approved structure without inventing unannounced fixtures or television assignments.
