OHL playoff seeds: why 99 points ranked above 100 in 2026

Canadian OHL

The real example removes the apparent contradiction

The OHL’s official 2026 playoff tracker lists Barrie second in the Eastern Conference with ninety-nine points and Ottawa third with one hundred. It also identifies Barrie as the Central Division champion. The OHL’s format page explains the relationship: the division leaders occupy the first two conference seeds.

This is not evidence that ninety-nine is greater than one hundred or that a point has been omitted. The displayed playoff order applies a qualification rule before treating every team as part of one unrestricted points sort. A seed is a competition position produced by the stated procedure, not a synonym for raw points rank.

Conference and division are different levels

The format page takes the top eight in each conference and protects the division leaders in its first two positions. Conference eligibility, division leadership and final seed therefore belong in separate columns. A table can accurately show all three while appearing unusual to someone reading only the points column.

For an original ledger, write team, conference, division-winner status, points and playoff seed. The division field explains why a club is protected; the points remain the points. Do not “correct” the playoff bracket by manually swapping two teams simply because the lower seed has one more point. That would replace the published seeding procedure with a different one.

The seed determines the opening pairing

The official format maps the first round within each conference as one against eight, two against seven, three against six, and four against five. Thus reading the protected seed correctly matters to the opponent route. Sorting a screenshot by points alone could assign the wrong opening opponent.

In a fictional eight-team bracket, seeds two and three meet different opponents even if their point totals are nearly identical. Their seed numbers are inputs to the pairing, not predictions of how those series will end. A lower seed winning a series changes the survivors; it does not retrospectively change the opening seed.

Later rounds are reseeded inside the conference

The OHL format says teams are reseeded within their conference after each round, with advancing division winners retaining the protected first two positions. The two conference champions eventually meet for the league title. A fixed bracket drawn before the first round can therefore mislead if it ignores that reseeding step.

Keep this guide’s actual ninety-nine-versus-one-hundred example attached to the 2026 archive. Its purpose is to make the format visible through a documented case, not to present those standings as live. For a later postseason, use its own teams and seeds while preserving the distinction between standings points and the rule that turns them into a bracket.

Questions answered

Was Ottawa’s 100-point total incompatible with third seed?

No. Barrie’s division-winner status explains its protected second seed in the 2026 tracker.

Does the OHL keep one fixed conference bracket throughout?

The checked format says teams are reseeded within each conference after each round.
