Competition identity

The destination is part of the award
Roland-Garros’ 2026 wildcard announcement has separate lists for men’s and women’s main draws and for their qualifying rounds. A wildcard into qualifying supplies a place in that earlier competition. A wildcard into the main draw supplies entry to a different stage. The shared word wildcard does not make the destinations interchangeable.
If a player’s name appears under qualifying rounds, an archive description saying they received a main-draw wildcard has changed the fact. Preserve the heading when copying an entry note; the player’s name alone cannot recover which invitation was announced.
A list can change without the category disappearing
The article’s 13 May update explains that Stan Wawrinka entered directly after a withdrawal and that the wildcard originally allocated to him was reassigned to Clément Tabur. It is a concrete example of why a dated entry announcement is a snapshot, not a permanent label attached to a player.
An original parallel scenario would be player A receiving a discretionary place, then qualifying for direct entry as the accepted field changes. Reallocating that invitation does not mean A was removed from the tournament. It means A’s route changed and the invitation became available to another player.
Entry status does not predict the match
A wildcard is an administrative route into a specified field. It does not say that the recipient will beat a direct entrant, and it does not award a bye unless the actual draw separately supplies one. Keep the entry list and the draw as related but different records.
For a clear Roland-Garros note, write the edition, the draw category, the entry status and the publication or update date. Then use the actual draw to follow subsequent progress. This makes the 2026 announcement useful as evidence while avoiding a claim that its named players or arrangements automatically apply to 2027.
An update can move the invitation, not the player’s place
The Wawrinka–Tabur update is useful because two records change together. Wawrinka’s place in the field continues under direct entry, while the discretionary allocation is available for reassignment. A table that stores only one yes-or-no “in tournament” field would miss the reason that another name appears on the revised wildcard list.
For an original two-player ledger, write A as “direct entry after field change” and B as “reassigned main-draw wildcard”. There are still two distinct entry explanations. Do not describe B as inheriting A’s eventual opponent, seed or match result: the reassigned item is the invitation described by the announcement. The actual draw supplies the opponent and any seed designation separately. Reading the updated text beside its category heading is what connects each player to the right fact.
Questions answered
Does every wildcard go directly to the main draw?
No. The organizer separately lists qualifying wildcards.
Can a player’s entry route change?
