UEFA and CAF Super Cups: qualified champions and a separate title

A Super Cup pairs champions from earlier competitions; the new match has its own trophy and deciding procedure.

A cup tie is not a league fixture

UEFA Super Cup

Identify which champions qualify

The UEFA Super Cup is contested by the reigning Champions League and Europa League winners. CAF’s Super Cup brings together its Champions League and Confederation Cup champions. The two Super Cups are separate competitions organized within different continental systems.

A domestic league champion is not automatically an entrant merely because it has won a major title. The specific qualifying trophy matters. Use the organizer’s confirmed pairing rather than inferring participants from a domestic table.

The earlier title and the new match are distinct achievements

Winning the qualifying competition earns the relevant route into a Super Cup. It does not award the Super Cup trophy itself. A club must still contest the new deciding match under its rules.

For a hypothetical example, Club A wins a continental Champions League and then loses its Super Cup appearance. Both statements can be true. The later result does not undo the earlier title, and the earlier title does not turn the later defeat into a Super Cup win.

Current UEFA Super Cups go straight to penalties after a draw

The 2026 UEFA regulations explicitly provide no extra time after a draw at the end of normal time. A shoot-out determines the winner. This differs from many familiar knockout finals that use thirty additional minutes first.

The rule is competition-specific. This guide does not assume the same procedure for every event named Super Cup. Check CAF’s applicable match rules for its contest rather than transferring UEFA’s clause simply because the titles sound alike.

Historical UEFA editions can have a different shape

UEFA explains that its Super Cup was generally played over two legs in its earlier history, with exceptions. The current single-match event should not be reconstructed by assuming an old return leg still exists.

An archived programme showing first leg or second leg is therefore not necessarily mislabelled. The year provides the missing context. When comparing old results, preserve the actual historical format rather than applying today’s single-match explanation retrospectively.

Record a shoot-out separately from the match score

If the ordinary match finishes level and a shoot-out follows, list the two outcomes separately. A hypothetical 2–2 match with a 4–3 shoot-out is not a 6–5 ordinary result. The deciding kicks explain the trophy winner without becoming match goals.

A Super Cup result also does not add ordinary points to the clubs’ domestic league tables. It is a separate title contest. This guide explains the qualification relationship and current UEFA decision rule without fabricating a fixture, claiming that a venue is always neutral or promising television access in a particular country.
