Swimming medleys: the individual race and relay start with different strokes

Follow the current medley order and distinguish one swimmer’s sections from four relay legs.

Saved marks, current questions

The first stroke identifies an important difference

World Aquatics’ February 2026 regulations give individual medley the order butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle. Medley relay uses backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle. Each stroke accounts for one quarter of the total distance in the named race.

The word medley means a sequence of strokes, but it does not guarantee the same sequence in these two formats. Seeing backstroke first in a relay is consistent with its rules. It is not evidence that the broadcast has skipped an opening butterfly section from an individual medley.

Map the distance into quarters

In an original two-hundred-metre individual-medley note, the four sections are fifty metres each: butterfly to fifty, backstroke to one hundred, breaststroke to one hundred and fifty, then freestyle to the finish. One swimmer performs all four sections in that individual event.

For a four-hundred-metre medley relay, each of the four stroke legs covers one hundred metres in the relay order. The first hundred is backstroke, followed by breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. The different total distance does not explain the order difference by itself; the individual-versus-relay category does.

A split needs a stage label

A time shown halfway through the individual medley measures progress after its second section. A relay split after the second leg also marks halfway, but follows a different stroke sequence and involves different swimmers. Equal fractions of the race do not make the split contexts identical.

Write distance completed, stroke section and individual or relay beside a saved split. This avoids describing the relay’s second swimmer as though they were the same person changing stroke. It also prevents a number attached to one leg from being compared casually with a total for the entire race.

The freestyle section is defined within medley rules

The current regulations specifically restrict the medley freestyle section and require each stroke section to finish under the rules for that stroke. The final section is therefore not permission to repeat any of the preceding three styles without regard to its defined conditions.

This page explains order and distance, rather than attempting to judge a turn from an incomplete camera view. The World Aquatics reference card separately lists incorrect individual order and incorrect relay order as infractions. That distinction confirms why the event category must be retained in an explanation. A useful archive title includes “individual medley” or “medley relay”, total distance and the completed race stage. Those words provide the context needed before interpreting the swimmer changes, stroke changes or timing graphics.

Questions answered

Does medley relay start with butterfly like individual medley?

No. The relay starts with backstroke.

Does one swimmer perform all four legs of a medley relay?

No. A relay’s stroke legs belong to its relay swimmers; individual medley has one swimmer perform the sections.
