Top 14

The threshold is five, not seven

LNR’s official Top 14 season explainer awards the defensive bonus for a loss by five points or fewer. Its offensive bonus requires at least three more tries than the opponent. These are competition-specific conditions; a generic rugby graphic using a seven-point losing threshold would give the wrong answer here.

An invented 24–18 defeat is a six-point loss and therefore misses this defensive-bonus threshold. A 24–19 defeat is a five-point loss and meets it. The single point between those examples changes the table consequence even though both remain defeats in the ordinary match record.

Count the difference in tries

The offensive condition compares tries scored by the two teams. It is not simply a fixed four-try target. A side scoring four tries against an opponent’s two has only a two-try advantage; scoring four against one provides a three-try advantage. Those different opponents’ try totals matter.

Conversions and penalty goals contribute to the on-field total but do not themselves increase the try difference. A high final score is therefore insufficient evidence for the offensive bonus. To explain the actual table award, retain the try counts as well as the ordinary result and margin.

Bonuses can make the finish competitive after a likely result

A late scoring opportunity can change a bonus outcome without changing which side wins. This explains why a team may keep pursuing a try or a narrower deficit even where the remaining time makes a full comeback unlikely. The table still has a separate competitive consequence.

For an original illustration, a side trailing by eight on the scoreboard can move within five through a penalty goal. Whether that occurs in a particular match depends on play and official decisions; the arithmetic merely explains the potential table effect. Do not describe every late score as meaningless because it fails to reverse the winner.

The title route continues after the league table

LNR describes twenty-six league rounds and a six-team final phase. The third- through sixth-placed teams enter the barrages, while the top two proceed further along the final-phase route. First place in the league and winning the Bouclier de Brennus are therefore related but different achievements.

When revisiting a season, record league position and finals outcome separately. The bonus calculations help build the league table that supplies qualification and seeding, while the later knockout games decide progress towards the title. Keeping those stages distinct prevents a league-table leader from being labelled champion before the deciding route has been completed.
