Four ten-minute quarters make forty regulation minutes
The WNBA’s official FAQ gives each quarter ten minutes. Four quarters therefore contain forty minutes of regulation game clock. That is different from the NBA’s twelve-minute quarters, even though both leagues use many familiar basketball terms.
A fourth-quarter graphic showing 2:30 means two minutes and thirty seconds of that period’s game clock remain. It does not promise the programme will end two and a half minutes later. Stoppages and the procedures needed to finish the game take real time.
The possession clock is a separate countdown
The WNBA uses a twenty-four-second shot clock. This governs a possession rather than the total quarter. A broadcast can show both clocks at once, and one can be running close to zero while the other still has several minutes.
For a hypothetical graphic with 4:12 in the quarter and eight seconds on the shot clock, the possession is under the more immediate deadline. Do not subtract eight from the team score or treat a shot-clock reset as an extra twenty-four seconds added to the quarter.
A season total is not one game’s format
The league FAQ states that each team plays forty-four regular-season games in 2026 and announces fifty from 2027. These are team season totals, not minutes in a game or the number of games in a playoff series.
When checking an archived schedule, retain the year. A fifty-game figure taken from the announced 2027 structure should not be used to claim that the 2026 schedule is incomplete. Conversely, a forty-four-game explanation should be reviewed before being reused for 2027.
A series result has another unit again
During postseason coverage, the graphic may also show games won in a series. That is different from points in the current game and from a regular-season win-loss record. Read the label before deciding what a leading number means.
A hypothetical team leading a series two games to one can still be trailing by ten points in the next game. The current score answers who is ahead now; the series count describes the route towards advancement. The specific season’s playoff rules establish how many victories are required.
Use the current rulebook for disputed timing
The WNBA’s official rulebook page points to its 2026 edition. That is the place to resolve detailed timing, reset, review and overtime questions. A concise FAQ can explain the main clock lengths without reproducing every exception.
The league FAQ also contains historical material in other sections. This guide uses its explicit clock and dated season statements rather than treating every old broadcast or labour-agreement paragraph as a current universal rule. Match timing and territorial viewing access are separate questions.
