FIFA Women's World Cup 2027

Brazil 2027 has thirty-two national teams

FIFA confirms thirty-two participating nations for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. The expansion to forty-eight is announced from the 2031 edition, not for Brazil 2027. The men’s 2026 expansion does not automatically determine the women’s format.

Keep gender and edition beside the competition name when comparing qualification routes. A correct forty-eight-team fact attached to the wrong finals would give a false picture of the available places.

The host place is included in a confederation allocation

Brazil qualifies automatically as host, and FIFA states that its place comes from CONMEBOL’s three direct slots. It is not a thirty-third place added after all thirty-two others have been filled.

The published direct allocation is six for AFC, four for CAF, four for Concacaf, three for CONMEBOL including Brazil, one for OFC and eleven for UEFA. Those totals add to twenty-nine. The remaining three places come through the play-off tournament.

A play-off place is not yet a finals place

The intercontinental play-off tournament has ten entrants competing for three finals berths. Qualifying to that tournament therefore gives a chance to progress, not the same status as direct qualification for the World Cup itself.

For a hypothetical example, a side announced as a play-off participant has reached another qualifying stage. It should not yet be included in a list labelled confirmed World Cup finals teams unless it has separately secured the actual finals place.

The play-off process has two phases

FIFA’s published arrangement sends six teams into the first phase. Two advance to join four teams already assigned to the second phase, where six teams form three paths. A knockout match in each path determines one of the final three qualifiers.

The arithmetic is six plus four minus the four eliminated in the first phase, leaving six in the deciding phase. Do not create ten independent final paths or assume every initial entrant needs the same number of wins. The draw and seeding rules establish the actual routes.

Use official qualification status before naming a field

As of this guide’s November 2026 check, the published pathway is not permission to invent the remaining finals line-up. Official results and the actual draw establish which teams take the available places.

The finals tournament, regional qualification and intercontinental play-offs are separate stages. A match in Brazil’s eventual finals programme should not be confused with a qualifying meeting involving the same countries. This guide explains the allocation and progression, while leaving unconfirmed pairings and local broadcast access to current official information.
