World Test Championship: compare the share of points available

Understand why the 2025–27 World Test Championship ranks teams by percentage rather than raw points alone.

Different match totals need a denominator

ICC awards 12 World Test Championship points for a win, six for a tie and four for a draw, with deductions possible for slow over-rates. The 2025–27 leaderboard uses the percentage of available points. That matters because teams’ series can contain different numbers of Tests.

Take an invented record of three wins and one defeat with no deduction. It produces 36 points from 48 available, or 75 percent. Another side with four wins and four defeats has 48 from 96, or 50 percent. The larger raw total does not describe the larger share of points won.

A draw is not a tie

The points allocation treats a drawn Test and a tied Test differently. A commentary statement that a team “only needs a draw” cannot be translated into six points by borrowing the tie allocation. A completed score record should retain the official result category.

For a simple hypothetical five-Test record, two wins, two draws and one loss would produce 32 of 60 points before deductions: 24 from wins and eight from draws. The resulting percentage is about 53.33. This worked example explains the mechanism; it is not a forecast of a finalist or a claim about an actual country’s table position.

Series and cycle are separate scoreboards

A bilateral series can already have a winner while its remaining eligible Test still contributes championship points. ICC describes the WTC as adding a championship context to those matches; the cycle’s top two reach its final.

When following an individual broadcast, record both questions: who leads this series, and what does this Test add to the cycle? A series lead does not automatically equal a WTC-final place. For a real qualification calculation, use the official current standings and any deductions instead of projecting only from match wins.

A deduction changes the numerator

For a real team record, subtract applicable championship-point deductions before calculating the percentage. The number of points available from the Tests played does not shrink merely because a deduction was imposed. Otherwise the calculation could incorrectly soften the effect by reducing both sides of the fraction.

Return to the hypothetical three-win, one-loss record: 36 points were earned from 48 available. If an illustrative two-point deduction applies, the adjusted numerator becomes 34, giving roughly 70.83 percent. Do not call the side a 75-percent team after the deduction simply because its match-result sequence has not changed.

This explains why a standings update can change after the completed match report has already established a result. One document records what happened in the Test; another can include the subsequent championship consequence. Use the adjusted official table for a qualification discussion rather than reconstructing it solely from wins, draws and losses.

Questions answered

Can more raw points coexist with a lower ranking percentage?

Yes. The number of available points can be larger too.

Are a draw and a tie worth the same?

No. ICC awards four for a draw and six for a tie.
