The 2026 event has three distinct stages
Riot’s published Worlds 2026 structure contains Play-In, Swiss and Knockout stages. Nineteen teams qualify overall, but they do not all enter the Swiss field directly. Four contest the Play-In double-elimination bracket, with one advancing to join the other fifteen.
A team appearing in a Play-In match is therefore already part of Worlds, while still competing for a Swiss place. The tournament name and the specific stage describe different levels of the same event.
The Swiss record counts match outcomes
In the sixteen-team Swiss stage, three match wins advance a team and three match losses eliminate it. From Round Two onwards, teams are paired with opponents holding the same record, subject to the published draw conditions. That is different from a fixed round-robin group where everyone meets everyone.
A hypothetical team at 2–1 is two match wins and one loss into Swiss. It needs one more match victory to advance, but another defeat would leave it 2–2 rather than immediately out. Its next result then decides whether it reaches three wins or three losses.
A best-of series contains individual games
The primer distinguishes best-of-one and best-of-three Swiss matches, while Play-In and Knockout use best-of-five contests. In a best-of-three, two game wins take the match. In a best-of-five, three do. An individual game’s kills are not a substitute for that match score.
If a hypothetical team wins a best-of-three 2–1, it receives one Swiss match victory. It does not receive two Swiss victories and one Swiss defeat. Those game results belong inside the single match.
A best-of-five can finish before five games
The maximum is a limit, not a required programme count. A 3–0 or 3–1 result completes a best-of-five before Game Five. A programme window can therefore include contingent time for games that never become necessary.
A hypothetical series level at 2–2 does require the fifth game; a series at 3–1 has ended. Keeping series wins separate from game statistics makes that difference easy to read, even when a particular game was close.
The knockout draw starts a new stage
The eight advancing teams enter the quarter-final draw under Riot’s published conditions. Swiss records influence the draw, but they are not extra game wins carried into a quarter-final. The Knockout stage decides advancement through its own best-of-five matches.
This guide describes the checked 2026 structure as of November 2026. It does not invent the eventual champion, use an older Play-In field size, or assume a later year will retain the same regional allocation. Use official results and the current bracket for the actual tournament state.
