Observe when the blank occurs
A brief blank or flicker exactly as playback starts can be the television changing video mode after Apple TV matches content. Apple documents this behavior for frame-rate and dynamic-range matching. A picture that returns promptly and then plays normally gives a different clue from repeated interruptions halfway through the programme.
