A group highlight is an intermediate choice
Switch Control item scanning can highlight a group before it reaches the individual control you want. Selecting that group continues scanning within it. Selecting an individual item stops scanning and opens the control menu. A highlighted row of programme tiles therefore need not mean that Play has already been selected.
This article starts with an already configured, usable switch. On a familiar system screen, practise selecting a group, reaching a single item and choosing its action before attempting an unfamiliar programme page. Keep a reliable way to leave the practice screen available.
Choose how scanning progresses
Apple’s checked tvOS guide places Scanning Style under Settings, Accessibility, Switch Control. Auto scanning advances the highlight automatically. Manual scanning uses one switch to move and another to activate. Single-switch step scanning advances with a switch and activates after a period without another action.
Choose for the viewer’s usable timing and switch arrangement. For automatic scanning, Auto Scanning Time changes the pace. A slower pace may make a selection easier to time; it also makes a long catalogue slower to traverse. Try a short task and adjust from that experience rather than choosing a speed from someone else’s setup.
Practise backing out as well as entering
Apple documents selecting the dashed group highlight to back out of a group. Escape in the control menu dismisses it without performing an action. Practise that exit with an unimportant item so a mistaken selection does not become an unwanted playback or account action.
Finally, try a small viewing journey: reach a programme, find Play, pause and return. Note any item that cannot be reached or has an unclear label. System scanning settings establish the navigation method; they do not certify a third-party application’s controls. Keep the successful style and timing recorded for the next session.
