Emby download jobs: review automatic removal before changing a season

Understand item limits, unwatched-only jobs and Remove Download before modifying offline media on a shared device.

Restart without deleting your account

Inspect the job that owns the local files

An Emby download job can cover one file, a season, a show or a larger collection. Before deleting or editing a download, identify the job and its destination device. A season-level rule can affect more files than the single episode currently displayed in the player.

Open the actual user’s download-management view on the destination and read the job name, status and included items. Keep one job as the case. Avoid creating a second overlapping job while investigating the first, because two rules targeting similar content can make later additions and removals harder to interpret.

Read the automatic-selection options

Emby documents options such as automatically downloading new content, an item limit and unwatched-only behavior. In the unwatched-only mode, watched videos can be removed from the device. That is a deliberate rule, not necessarily a failed storage system. Review the job settings before concluding that episodes disappeared unexpectedly.

Compare the account’s watched state with the local items and the configured limit. Keep the same user throughout the comparison. A household member using another profile can legitimately have a different watched list and download rule, even on media from the same server. Document the actual job owner rather than assuming a server-wide state.

Distinguish editing a job from removing it

The developer’s download-management route provides an edit action and a Remove Download action. Its documentation says removing the job also deletes files copied as part of that job. Read the scope before confirming, particularly for a season or library job. Keep any independently needed local material protected through your own storage workflow.

If only one item needs cancellation, inspect the documented item-level controls within the job. Do not choose a broader removal simply because it is the first menu entry. Write down the intended change in plain language before applying it: for example, stop future additions while retaining the current test, or remove this complete downloaded season.

Check preparation and transfer status separately

Administrators can inspect jobs across users and devices through the dashboard’s Devices and Downloads section. Emby also exposes Convert Media and Transfer Media tasks. Use those stages when a job remains incomplete; a conversion task and a transfer task are not the same operation.

After a deliberate edit, inspect the job’s included items and the destination’s downloaded-media view again. Confirm the resulting rule matches the intention before taking the device offline. The expected outcome is understood automatic behavior and removal scope, not an assumption that every download is permanent or that a server poster proves a local file remains present.

Questions answered

Why might a downloaded episode disappear after I watch it?

An unwatched-only job can remove watched items from the device. Inspect that rule and the job owner’s watched state.

Does Remove Download only stop future transfers?

Emby says it removes the job and files copied as part of it. Review the scope before confirming a season or larger job removal.
