Define the folder’s purpose before installing the feature
Emby Folder Sync copies media to a folder or external storage and can prepare alternate versions. The developer identifies it as a Premiere server-administration feature. Begin by deciding whether the target is an archive copy or a deliberately prepared playback version; those goals can require different quality and storage choices.
Choose a small authorized sample and an actual destination you control. Keep its location separate from the source media in your notes. A folder called Backup is not automatically an independent backup if it sits on the same vulnerable storage as the original. Define the intended recovery or playback purpose explicitly.
Install through the documented server catalogue
Emby documents installing Folder Sync from the dashboard’s plug-in catalogue and restarting the server to complete installation. Follow that current route and verify the plug-in is present before searching for a destination in a client. An ordinary player installation does not create a server-side sync folder.
Add the destination path and a clear display name. Choose a name that identifies its purpose to users, since the documentation says it appears in Download to menus and playback choices. Labels such as Mobile prepared or Archive originals are more informative than several indistinguishable copies named New folder.
Choose who can write jobs to the destination
Folder Sync allows the administrator to grant access to all users or select specific users for creating jobs that write to the folder. Make that choice deliberately. A viewer who can play an item does not necessarily need permission to create archive copies or consume storage through conversion jobs.
Check the server process’s access to the actual destination and the selected user’s visibility of that destination. These are different permission layers. If the target does not appear in Download to for a user, inspect the configured grant before changing the filesystem or broadening all server privileges.
Complete and inspect one sample job
Create a job for the known sample using Download to and the named folder destination. Observe preparation and transfer completion, then inspect the resulting file in the target location. If the purpose is prepared playback, open the item through the intended client and inspect which version is selected.
Emby can use additional sources when appropriate, but a converted copy does not guarantee every client will use it in every circumstance. Record the actual source, profile and outcome before scaling the workflow. The expected result is a controlled destination with an understood user scope and a verified sample, not an untested promise of automatic CPU savings.
Questions answered
Why does a sync destination appear for the administrator but not a viewer?
Folder Sync can restrict which users may create jobs for each destination. Check that grant separately from filesystem access.
Does creating a prepared version guarantee every client will select it?
Verify the actual client and item. Emby documents use of additional sources where appropriate; selection still depends on the available version and playback route.
