The existing assignment changes the route
Google documents a distinct editing path when the customizable star button already displays device inputs. In that state, relying only on a button hold can leave the user cycling television inputs instead of reaching the expected shortcut choices.
This is a configuration question, not evidence that the remote has lost its connection. Check whether the current button action still reaches the display before pairing the remote again.
Open the assignment through settings
On the streaming device, open All settings, Remotes and Accessories, Set up remote buttons, Customizable button. Choose the new documented role: Google Home panel, favourite app or display inputs. Follow the confirmation prompts for the selected role.
Google also asks that no physical barrier block the remote-to-display path in this setup. Keep the TV visible to the remote during the configuration rather than diagnosing it from behind a cabinet door.
Verify the replacement action
Press the button from the normal seat and confirm exactly what opens. Then check the return route to the Home Screen. A household shortcut is useful only if the viewer understands both the action and how to leave it.
Record the assignment after changing it, especially where more than one person uses the remote. This avoids a later working shortcut being reported as broken simply because someone expected its previous input-control role.
Questions answered
Do I need to reset the remote to change this shortcut?
Google provides a settings path for editing the existing input assignment.
Can I assign several simultaneous roles?
The documented setup asks you to choose the shortcut role; verify the one currently assigned.
