Check HLS target duration with the specified rounding rule

Catch a small segment-duration declaration error without treating TARGETDURATION as a precise encoder cut instruction.

Europe. In the picture.

A small decimal can change the result

A segment labelled slightly longer than the target is not enough, by itself, to decide whether the playlist violates RFC 8216. The specified check rounds each EXTINF duration to the nearest integer before comparing it with TARGETDURATION. Retain the decimal values in the report rather than rounding the entire spreadsheet on import.

For an invented target duration of 6, an EXTINF value of 6.49 rounds to 6, while 6.51 rounds to 7. The second value fails that particular comparison. These values deliberately avoid the halfway case; the example does not prescribe a programming language's tie-breaking function.

Verify the declaration against the media

Passing a tag comparison does not establish that EXTINF accurately describes the segment. Keep a separate check for measured media timing and boundary continuity. If the exporter writes an incorrect duration, making two incorrect tags agree will not repair the package.

Look across the presentation, including the final short segment and any splice or encoder restart. A sample from the beginning cannot establish the longest later segment. Save the validation result with the exact playlist revision and the corresponding media generation.

Fix the right stage

If the media timing is sound but the declaration is wrong, correct the manifest-generation stage. If the segments themselves depart from the intended packaging profile, revisit encoder and segmenter coordination. Those are different release decisions and may require different artifacts to be regenerated.

Avoid treating TARGETDURATION as a command that forces every encoded segment to have exactly that length. Keyframe placement and actual sample timing still require their own review. This is a document-based validation design, not an observed failure on IPTV Europe.

Questions answered

Is every 6.01-second segment invalid with target 6?

That decimal alone does not fail the RFC's nearest-integer comparison. The duration must still be accurate and other rules still apply.

Can one successful segment prove the playlist is valid?

No. Check all relevant EXTINF values and the package's other requirements.
