Jellyfin series mismatch: check season folders and special numbering

Use a single series to distinguish folder organization, episode numbering and provider-specific special episodes.

Keep a record before reinstalling

Locate the mismatch at the correct level

A series can have the right poster while individual episodes are matched incorrectly. Begin with one affected series and write down whether the wrong result concerns the series identity, the season or a specific episode. Keep the actual file and its current path in a private record. Do not assume a correct series title proves the episode numbering matches your metadata provider.

Jellyfin documents a series-folder and season-folder organization for Shows libraries. Inspect the directory tree from the server’s perspective. Files that were moved by a download or archival tool can end up alongside season folders even though the intended structure was different. Confirm the real layout before editing displayed titles.

Compare the ordinary episode pattern first

The developer’s naming guide uses Season followed by a number for season directories and standard season-and-episode information in episode filenames. Check one ordinary episode whose identity is certain. Keep the series, season and episode information internally consistent and preserve the media extension.

If one file contains two episodes, document that fact before trying to create two separate library entries from it. Jellyfin says multi-episode files are shown as one entry containing metadata from the episodes. The number of source files and the number of broadcast episodes need not be identical, so count both before concluding that a scan lost content.

Treat specials as provider-specific identification

Jellyfin’s guide places specials in Season 00 and notes that their episode numbering can differ between metadata providers. Compare the chosen provider’s actual record for the special you own. A number copied from a different database can fetch a real but unrelated special, making the result appear plausible while still being wrong.

If the provider has no entry for the special, the documentation recommends a descriptive filename rather than a guessed numbered identity. Preserve an accurate description of your own content. Do not invent a provider identifier or assign a convenient episode number only to force a poster or plot into the library.

Refresh and verify one known sequence

After a targeted correction, inspect the affected season and open the known episode. Compare its displayed identity with the content, not only the thumbnail. Keep the next episode as a second check so an off-by-one numbering problem is less likely to remain hidden.

If the same wrong metadata returns, inspect local NFO inputs and provider identification before repeating the scan. Retain the original directory names until the result is understood. This procedure organizes a real personal library; it does not create missing episodes or establish rights to obtain them from an unrelated source.

Questions answered

Why do my specials disagree with another person’s episode numbers?

Jellyfin notes that special numbering can vary by metadata provider. Compare the record in the provider your library actually uses.

Will a two-episode video necessarily appear as two separate files in the library?

No. Jellyfin documents multi-episode files as a single entry containing metadata from multiple episodes. Check the real source-file arrangement.
