A university Kanopy film request begins on the website

Find an academic title outside the institution’s current collection and submit a useful access request.

Identify an academic collection question

A film missing from a university user’s Kanopy television app may not be a failed search or a device fault. Kanopy’s academic workflow distinguishes titles in the institution’s collection from titles for which access can be requested. Its help says the TV and mobile apps show only the collection, while the Request Access search tab is available on the website. Start by confirming which institution is selected and whether the need concerns an academic account. The workflow here is for university students and staff; it should not be assumed to describe every public-library ticket arrangement.

Search the website before reinstalling the app

Use the genuine Kanopy website, search the exact film and inspect the Request Access tab if it appears in the university context. Check the year or filmmaker when several works share a name. If a film appears outside the current collection, preserve that distinction: the catalogue has identified the work, but the institution has not necessarily provided immediate viewing access. A hypothetical student preparing a seminar should record that status before promising classmates a screening. Reinstalling the TV app will not submit an institutional request, and finding the film in a general web search does not establish the university’s entitlement.

Make the request useful to the institution

Kanopy’s form provides a needed-by date and an optional needed-until date, and the request goes to the institution for review. Use real course or research dates rather than automatically leaving an urgent deadline if access is not actually urgent. Explain the exact work and viewing need in the appropriate form fields. Do not include unrelated personal information or assume that a submitted request is an immediate approval. Keep a private note of what you requested and when. If a class depends on the film, ask the library about the expected decision rather than treating the player as a booking confirmation.

Recheck access before the planned viewing

Once the institution responds, use the selected library context again and verify that the title is now available as expected. Keep the request record separate from any eventual playback error. If the institution has not granted access, use its legitimate follow-up route or choose an available alternative; another person’s login is not a substitute. For a teaching plan, retain the film title, institution, request status and deadline in one note. This creates a clear handoff between discovery, collection approval and actual viewing, and prevents a last-minute television search from carrying a decision that belongs to the library.

Questions answered

Why can the Kanopy website show an academic title that the TV app does not?

The academic Request Access tab is website-only; Kanopy says its TV and mobile apps show titles in the selected library’s collection.

Does submitting the form immediately unlock the film?

No. The request is sent to the institution for review; confirm the outcome before planning the screening.
