Read the lesson identity before comparing speed
UR lists Newsreel and Newsreel easy as separate English-learning series. The current records place regular Newsreel at B1 for grades 7–9 and Easy at A2/B1 for grades 4–6. Those labels overlap; they are not a mechanical switch between two universal learner types.
The edition records also show that the topics can differ on the same date. The 31 October 2026 listings share one subject but include different additional stories. Easy should therefore not be assumed to be the identical audio slowed down. Choose the report you need, not just the label that sounds more convenient.
Use level and topic together
For a prepared session, inspect the descriptions and choose one story with a clear listening purpose. It might be identifying the issue, explaining a participant’s reason or reporting one comparison. A familiar subject can help learners focus on the English; unfamiliar background may require preparation even in the easier-labelled edition.
Use the level as published guidance, then preview the actual recording and supporting material. School-year labels belong to the service’s educational context. They do not establish that an adult learner of a certain age should use one series or that every pupil in a year group needs the same task.
If comparing the two series, choose a genuinely shared subject and establish what overlaps first. Otherwise, differences in answers may reflect different news content rather than a change in listening difficulty.
Keep the manuscript and worksheet attached to the right recording
UR supplies dated manuscripts, quizzes and worksheets. Match the series name as well as the date before using them. An Easy worksheet and a regular recording from the same day can still be a mismatch.
After listening, use the matching manuscript to check the specific passage the task concerned. Keep an answer based on the recording separate from later background research. The result is a small, coherent lesson: one edition, an appropriate question and the resources intended for that edition.
Questions answered
Is Newsreel easy always the same stories at a slower speed?
The checked parallel edition records contain different topic selections. Inspect each edition.
Is the date enough to match a worksheet?
Keep the series name as well. Regular Newsreel and Newsreel easy can have separate resources on the same date.
