Recover an older NFB digital purchase with its receipt and file record

Use the purchased-film route and dated file guidance instead of treating it as an offline save in the newer NFB Films app.

Begin with the transaction you are trying to recover

An older NFB website purchase and a temporary offline selection in the NFB Films application are different records. Start with the original dated receipt, film title, purchasing email and any existing local filename. Keep the private payment information out of a public request. The support centre retains a Digital Downloads category alongside its newer app help, which makes the transaction type important. A hypothetical viewer returning to a documentary bought years earlier should investigate that purchase rather than assume installing the new free app automatically imports the old computer file.

Use the purchased-films account route

NFB’s purchased-film help directs buyers to the account’s purchases area and specifies signing in with the email address rather than a remembered username. Use the genuine site and the account associated with the receipt. If the purchase appears there, inspect the offered current options before starting another transaction. If it does not, retain the original confirmation and ask NFB about that specific order. A successful new app session is not evidence that the historical purchasing account was found. Likewise, an old browser bookmark is not a substitute for a recognized purchase record.

Locate the actual saved file without guessing compatibility

The purchase help recommends choosing a deliberate Save As destination when obtaining a file. For an existing copy, inspect the filename, location and file properties before trying unrelated applications. NFB’s format article is dated 2015 and describes its downloadable films using MP4, H.264 and AAC; its resolution article is also dated. Treat those publications as context for older purchases, not a universal modern-device certification. The actual file and current player documentation determine the useful compatibility question. Avoid downloading a codec bundle from an unofficial page merely because an old help article names an obsolete player version.

Keep an orderly recovery record

After locating the correct account or file, keep the film title, receipt reference, local destination and selected edition together privately. Confirm the intended copy opens through a legitimate current playback route before moving or discarding another copy. A file that exists but fails to play is a different problem from an order missing from the purchase account. Report the corresponding evidence to NFB support. This approach preserves the useful information in a legacy transaction while recognizing that the 2026 NFB app’s temporary offline instructions address a different product and cannot by themselves explain every historical downloadable-film purchase.

Questions answered

Will installing NFB Films automatically identify every older website purchase?

Do not assume that. Use the original purchase record and the NFB purchased-films account route.

Should the 2015 file-format help be treated as a current guarantee for every device?

No. Identify the actual file and consult current player support; retain the dated NFB article as historical product context.
