Find the National Film Board’s actual service
The National Film Board of Canada presents NFB Films as a free application for documentaries, animation and series, without a subscription or advertisements. Its current app page links mobile and television viewing and describes casting from a mobile device. That identifies a publisher-operated service, not an instruction to obtain an IPTV playlist.
Search for NFB Films through the store route supplied by the NFB, then identify the film version you want. An animated short, a feature documentary and a related collection can have similar artwork but different running programmes. A promotional collection is a discovery aid rather than a promise that every historical NFB production is offered in the same way.
Leave the app open while a download completes
The NFB’s July 2026 download-help article says closing the application cancels an in-progress film download. It tells viewers to keep the app open and maintain a stable connection, then find completed items in the offline tab together with their viewing-expiration date. A progress indicator is not the same as a completed offline selection.
Before relying on a film for travel, inspect the actual saved item and its date. Do not assume that a download survives indefinitely because the streaming service has no subscription fee. A completed app download is still governed by the app’s offered viewing arrangement rather than becoming an unrestricted video file.
Keep app downloads separate from digital purchases
The NFB help centre has a separate Digital Downloads category covering purchased films, downloadable formats, media-player requirements and related territory questions. Those questions describe a different transaction from saving an eligible film in the NFB Films application. The same everyday word “download” can therefore refer to different products.
If a film was purchased through the website, keep the transaction and purchased-file instructions with the support request. If it was saved inside the free application, use the app’s offline instructions. Reinstalling an unrelated media player will not explain why an in-app save was cancelled when the app closed.
Check the country and accessibility version
The app help separately addresses country availability, while the streaming help includes film-specific territory questions. An application appearing in a store and a particular film playing in a location are distinct checks. Use the current NFB programme page and support rather than inferring worldwide availability from the organisation’s Canadian identity.
For accessibility, consult the NFB’s dedicated accessibility route and the selected version. A historical count of captioned or described titles should not be presented as a guarantee for every film today. Give support the film title, language/version, device and whether the problem arose in streaming, an app save or a purchased file.
Questions answered
Why might an NFB app download stop when I close the application?
The NFB’s current help says closing the app cancels the download; keep it open until completion.
Is an offline app selection the same as a purchased digital film?
No. The NFB maintains separate guidance for in-app offline viewing and digital-download purchases.
