Nova audio passthrough: choose a mode for the actual receiver route

Compare Nova and system encapsulation or AC3 recoding against the real HDMI or ARC chain using one known audio sample.

Picture but no sound?

Identify who should decode the audio

Begin by drawing the actual connection in your notes: player, television, receiver and the ports between them. Identify where you intend the audio to be decoded. A soundbar connected through ARC is a different route from a box connected directly to the receiver, so preserve that physical distinction throughout the first comparison.

Choose one authorized sample with known audio and establish normal playback first. Record the selected audio track and the receiver’s reported input where available. A video file can contain several soundtracks, so a different selection can change the result independently of the passthrough setting.

Read the three documented mode roles

Under Settings and Audio, compare Nova encapsulation, system encapsulation or Universal AC3 recode as applicable. Record the initial choice. For an original test, keep one known soundtrack and compare the receiver’s displayed format alongside audible speech. The mode label is an input to the comparison, not a score showing that a larger number is better.

Keep the working starting state recoverable. Change one selection at a time and retain the same display and receiver inputs. If a sample goes silent, return to the recorded state before testing another route. A clear before-and-after result helps avoid a configuration assembled from several simultaneous guesses.

Compare one known track through the same chain

Change only the intended mode, then replay the same sample from the same point. Observe sound, receiver format information and synchronization. If one mode yields silence, retain that exact result rather than repeatedly cycling modes without notes. A receiver format banner and audible output are separate observations.

Check the connected equipment’s real capabilities before expecting a format to pass through every intermediate component. If changing the physical route is necessary for a later comparison, document it as a separate test. A different HDMI input or return-audio path can change the negotiation independently of Nova.

Retain the compatible configuration with its limits

Once an appropriate mode is identified, test the ordinary content types you actually use and keep the track information with the results. One successful audio format does not certify every codec, channel layout or high-bitrate combination. Keep a normal decoded-output fallback if that better fits the hardware.

The expected outcome is an understood audio route for a specific player, television and receiver chain. It does not improve the source recording, add channels or certify an IPTV Europe stream. If playback-speed controls are needed, inspect Nova’s documented interaction with passthrough separately.

Questions answered

What should I record when one mode produces silence?

Keep the exact mode, selected soundtrack, physical audio route and receiver result. Restore the known starting state before changing another variable.

Does a successful sample prove every audio format will work?

No. Keep the selected track and receiver result with the test. Other formats and routes can have different requirements.
