Set the Roku Guest Mode checkout date before signing into apps

Use the documented guest-session controls and clear the session when travel plans change.

Check that the device is actually in Guest Mode

When using a Roku in a short-term rental, begin by asking the host about the device’s intended guest setup. Roku’s Guest Mode provides a checkout-date screen and a separate session in which visitors can use their own apps. Do not assume that an ordinary home screen is already a disposable guest session. A hypothetical traveller should establish the session before entering a personal streaming account. The host’s device ownership and the visitor’s subscription are different account contexts. Keep both clear so that a borrowed television does not become an informal shared-password arrangement.

Select the date deliberately

The UK guest guide describes choosing and confirming a checkout date, with automatic sign-out at the stated checkout time. Read the displayed date rather than selecting a convenient calendar square without checking the month. Keep the date aligned with the stay, and review the current guide if plans change. The guest controls include changing the automatic sign-out date through Guest Options. This is an ordinary session-management task, not a reason to change the Roku owner’s account settings or payment information. A clear date gives the visitor a predictable end to the local session.

Use manual clearing for an early departure

Roku documents Sign out and clear info under the guest-mode options for someone who wants to finish the session before the automatic date. Use that intended control rather than leave the TV simply powered off while accounts remain in the guest session. If a visitor has already left, the guide describes the host’s official remote Sign Guest Out option. The visitor should contact the legitimate host; no account password needs to be sent to an unrelated helper. Clearing the guest device session should also not be mistaken for a confirmation that a separate paid streaming subscription has been cancelled.

Keep app purchases and access conditions separate

Roku explains that guests cannot bill purchases to the host’s Roku account through Guest Mode, but can make purchases inside an app where their own payment method is stored. Read any app purchase confirmation before approving it. The device session does not grant programme rights, remove a provider’s travel rules or guarantee that a particular subscription works at the destination. Before departure, confirm the actual guest clearing result and retain any deliberate purchase record privately. This creates a practical travel routine: establish Guest Mode, select the correct date, use personal apps only as intended and clear the local session when the stay ends.

Questions answered

Yes. Roku documents the manual Sign out and clear info control in guest options.

Does Guest Mode make every app purchase free?

No. Roku notes that purchases can still occur inside apps with the guest’s own payment method.
