Butterfly’s underwater limit is measured from each start or turn

Interpret butterfly surfacing after starts and turns while recognising the distinct final-approach provision.

Saved marks, current questions

The marker concerns the head surfacing

World Aquatics’ February 2026 butterfly rule requires the head to break the surface by fifteen metres after the start and each turn. The same clause separately permits submersion after the head passes the final five-metre mark when reaching for the finish. These are different parts of the length.

Imagine two swimmers surfacing at different distances after a turn. The swimmer staying under longer has not automatically broken the rule; compare the head’s surfacing point with the fifteen-metre reference. A fast underwater section and an excessive one are different observations.

Do not transfer the turn limit to the finish

The finish provision concerns a different reference and action. A swimmer disappearing below the surface near the wall cannot be interpreted solely by recalling the post-turn fifteen-metre phrase. Identify whether the camera shows an exit from a turn or the final approach.

A side-on pool view can show the marker and head together, while an underwater camera may obscure the exact surface crossing. Use the angle suited to that question. This article explains butterfly race interpretation, not breath-holding technique or training advice, and does not extend the same wording indiscriminately to every stroke.

Questions answered

Does staying underwater longer than another swimmer prove a violation?

No. Compare with the applicable marker.

Are the turn exit and final reach the same situation?

No. The cited clause treats them separately.
