The device and platform

Check the two download options
A Vimeo film can play with captions online without offering a downloadable caption file. Vimeo’s help distinguishes the video download from the caption download, and warns that not every title enables both. Before organising a backup, inspect the official download panel for the language you need.
Treat the result as two separate checks: is there a video file, and is there the required caption file? A successful video transfer answers only the first question. Keep the film page open until you have confirmed what the seller actually offers.
Make a folder that explains itself
Create one folder for the film and place its video and available caption files together. Preserve the original file extensions. If several caption languages are offered, give each a clear language label in your own folder notes rather than guessing from a sequence of similar filenames.
Vimeo documents opening the video in VLC, then choosing Subtitles and Add Subtitle File to select the downloaded SRT. Use the official player source linked by Vimeo if you need that application. This is the provider’s documented method, not a claim that every television will recognise the same files automatically.
Verify readability before the deadline
Play a short dialogue passage, check that the chosen language appears, and confirm the text belongs to this film. Then examine a later passage as well. A file existing on disk does not establish that the language, timing and film edition match. Record any problem while the title page is still accessible.
If the caption file is not offered, Vimeo recommends contacting the seller. Describe the exact film and requested language. Do not promise yourself that another subtitle file found elsewhere will fit the same edit. Vimeo On Demand closes on 20 November 2026, so this article’s preparation advice is dated to 4 November 2026.
Keep the viewing copy understandable
Keep the receipt reference in a small accompanying note, separate from the media filenames. That helps you identify the authorised source later without renaming the film after an order number. If you move the folder to another computer, move the caption file too and repeat a short check in your chosen compatible player.
Questions answered
Does an online caption button guarantee a caption download?
No. Vimeo says caption-file downloads are not enabled for every On Demand title.
Is saving the video alone sufficient for separate SRT captions?
No. Vimeo’s documented method requires both the video and the caption file.
