A sender shortcut cannot prepare the receiver
Windows plus K opens the sending PC’s wireless-display selection. Microsoft separately requires a receiving Windows PC to have the Wireless Display optional feature and a launched receiving app. Opening the shortcut on both PCs is not equivalent to configuring those roles.
Decide which computer should show the other’s screen. Do the receiver preparation there, then return to the sender for selection.
Check the installed Windows version
Microsoft’s instructions use the Wireless Display app on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, while older instructions can refer to Connect. Follow the route matching the installed system rather than searching indefinitely for an app name from another release.
In Projecting to this PC settings, review discoverability and follow the optional-feature installation prompts. Launch the receiving application and keep Wi-Fi enabled as required. Then search from the sender again.
Validate before presenting private information
Project an ordinary desktop first and confirm the receiver’s name and screen. A similar device name nearby is not sufficient identification. Only open the intended video or presentation after the correct receiver is established.
If it remains absent, check Miracast support and current receiving state. Do not infer that a streaming account or media file controls whether the receiving PC advertises itself.
Questions answered
Why does Windows plus K not install the receiver?
It is a sending control. The receiving PC has its own optional feature and app setup.
Why do guides mention both Connect and Wireless Display?
Microsoft distinguishes the app route by Windows release; check the version being used.
