The choice concerns local state
Apple TV stores apps locally even though much viewing is streamed. Apple distinguishes Offload, which removes an app while retaining its documents and data, from Delete, which removes the app and its data from the device. Choose the state you want to keep before freeing space.
That distinction matters for a player with saved preferences or a household app that is used only occasionally. An account existing on a server does not prove every local setting will return after deletion. Check the app publisher’s backup or sign-in behavior separately.
Inspect usage before choosing an action
Open Settings, General, Manage Storage to see the app usage list. Identify an app you recognize and no longer need immediately. Prefer a deliberate selection over deleting several unfamiliar entries and hoping the remaining setup still works.
If retaining local data is useful, select Offload where offered. If you intend to remove the local app state as well, select Delete. Read the on-screen confirmation for the selected item before proceeding. Record any app-specific restore information privately first.
Understand automatic offloading
Apple also provides Offload Unused Apps under Settings, Apps. Offloaded apps remain on the Home Screen with a download indicator. Selecting one downloads it again; restoring depends on the app still being available in the App Store.
This makes offloading useful for occasional apps, but it should not be treated as guaranteed permanent access to discontinued software. Before offloading an essential legacy app, check its current store listing and whether the viewer can sign in again if required.
Verify the result that matters
After recovering space, confirm that the intended install or update can proceed. Then open the household’s main viewing app and check its normal route. The important outcome is a usable setup with enough free space, not simply a smaller storage number.
If a removed app later returns without its expected preferences, distinguish offloading from deletion and check its account sync behavior. Avoid presenting reinstallation as a universal backup method. This is a storage-state guide based on Apple’s documentation, not a test of any player’s recovery process.
Questions answered
Does Offload keep the app installed?
It removes the app itself while retaining its documents and data for a possible later download.
Is an offloaded app guaranteed to return forever?
No. Apple’s restore process depends on continued App Store availability.
