Find the existing library rather than reinstalling the old app
Google’s product notice retired Google Play Movies & TV access on the affected Android TV devices and the Google Play website. It directed existing purchases and active rentals to current viewing routes including Google TV and YouTube. An old store icon disappearing therefore does not by itself mean you need to buy the film again.
Start with the Google account on the original purchase receipt. Google’s current library help repeatedly requires the same purchasing account across platforms. A television signed into a family member’s different account can show a different library even when the hardware and internet connection are working.
Use the current Library or Purchased area
Google’s current help describes the Google TV app’s Your stuff and Library area, and YouTube’s Movies & TV and Purchased routes. The older transition notice distinguishes Android TV Shop access from YouTube on some provider set-top boxes. Use the route available on the actual device rather than searching only for the retired Play Movies application.
Locate the specific transaction and title before using a new Buy button found through general search. A promotional film page, a rental offer and your existing purchased edition can be separate entries. If the account is correct but the item is absent, retain the receipt and exact edition for Google support.
Keep the later TV-show purchase boundary clear
A separate Google product notice changed where new television episodes and seasons could be purchased. It says earlier purchases remained accessible, while television shows purchased on YouTube after that change would be accessible only through YouTube. Do not extend a statement about an older shared library into a guarantee about every later transaction.
Check whether the item is a movie, television episode or full season and where it was bought. Also distinguish a one-time transaction from a Primetime Channel or YouTube TV subscription. Those products can appear in related interfaces while having different access conditions, billing and programme availability.
Questions answered
Does the retired Google Play Movies & TV app mean I should automatically repurchase old films?
No. Google directs existing purchases to current players; first check the purchasing account and its library.
