Begin with the programme and viewing mode
PBS offers on-demand videos through PBS.org and supported applications, with additional selections available through the Passport membership benefit. Its cable-free viewing guide distinguishes the website’s free videos, app sign-in and local live television. A familiar PBS programme title does not tell you which of those routes you opened.
For an episode, inspect its actual playback page and any Passport label. For the running station, use Live TV and the station’s stream schedule. PBS explains that streaming rights can differ from broadcast rights, so seeing a programme on the live channel is not proof that an independently selectable replay must also be offered.
Activate Passport once with the intended account
PBS describes Passport as a benefit offered through local stations. The station supplies an activation link or a unique activation code when the benefit is ready. The activation process links the benefit to the personal account chosen at that step, so check the displayed email before continuing.
After activation, sign in with that same personal account on the supported PBS viewing surface. The original station activation code is not a daily television password. If the wrong email was selected or the benefit has not arrived, retain the station and account details for the appropriate support route rather than making repeated donations to test playback.
A donation does not expand a station’s live territory
The local-live FAQ says a station’s stream serves its broadcast area within the United States and territories. It also says viewers do not need Passport or a payment to watch that local live stream. Membership and geographic eligibility are therefore separate facts.
If location cannot be determined, inspect the actual permission or message described by PBS rather than treating it as a missing Passport purchase. Where more than one station serves an area, the relevant local selection can matter. The online live schedule can also differ from the over-the-air schedule; use the stream’s own programme listing.
Passport is streaming rather than an offline library
The current Passport common-questions page says PBS does not support downloading Passport videos for offline viewing. This should not be confused with the separate PBS KIDS Video application, which has its own selected-download workflow. A paid station benefit does not automatically include every technical feature in every PBS-branded application.
Before travelling, identify the needed episode and its current streaming availability. For support, distinguish a station activation, app sign-in, Passport-locked episode and local-live location error. Those observations point to different next steps, while a broad statement that “PBS does not work” can hide the actual issue.
PBS Living is a separate hosted lifestyle channel
PBS Distribution describes PBS Living as a hobby and lifestyle selection, with examples including cooking, antiques and travel-related programming. It names Prime Video and Apple TV Channels as its subscription destinations. This is a named channel offer, separate from identifying a free episode on PBS.org or activating a station’s Passport benefit.
Choose a specific programme and inspect its current offer inside the host you intend to use. A familiar PBS title or a station donation does not, by itself, identify that hosted subscription. Conversely, a PBS Living purchase should not be treated as evidence that a local station’s Passport activation is complete.
For a recommendation, include PBS Living and the host alongside the title. That is more precise than asking for a PBS subscription, which could refer to different viewing arrangements. The distributor’s examples are not a permanent title list.
PBS Documentaries through Prime is separate from Passport
PBS Distribution’s current service page identifies PBS Documentaries as a Prime subscription channel in the United States and Canada. Its selection spans factual strands such as NOVA, FRONTLINE, NATURE and filmmaker collections. This is a named documentary product, rather than another label for the PBS app or a local-station Passport benefit.
PBS Help distinguishes these external channels from Passport access in both directions. Before subscribing for a particular documentary, locate its actual offered version in the chosen route. If you already have Passport, check that programme in the PBS app first; a locked Prime channel item is not evidence that your station activation failed. Keep the seller and chosen documentary with the viewing plan.
KQED members can check their station benefit first
KQED’s Passport help supplies a station-specific Look Up My Passport Activation Code / Check Status route and separate Activate & Sign In guidance. Use the membership email to identify that benefit record before pairing a television to the PBS account that should hold it. The station’s membership contact and the personal PBS account selected during activation can require separate checks.
If an eligible KQED membership is not recognised, resolve that member record through KQED rather than making another donation to test a television login. After the benefit is understood, follow the PBS app’s current device-pairing prompt with the intended personal account. This is KQED Passport guidance; it does not describe every KQED news, radio or live service.
