Channels collections: choose manual curation or a Smart Rule

Build a Channels library collection with an understood membership rule and a useful browsing order.

A player organises the experience

Define what membership means

Write a sentence describing the collection. A manually chosen set might contain a particular sequence of owned films for a discussion. A dynamic set might gather short videos carrying a specific project label. The first is an editorial selection; the second is a rule that should react when the library changes.

Choose a few existing items that clearly belong and a few that clearly do not. Keep one borderline item with incomplete metadata. This small specimen set makes the collection’s meaning testable before it contains hundreds of entries or becomes the source of another browsing surface.

Use the collection and rule controls deliberately

Channels Library Collections hold movies or shows, and its Smart Rules select library content dynamically from criteria. The collection documentation identifies tvOS/iOS availability and describes server-side rule management. Use the actual supported client for the viewing check rather than assuming every platform presents an identical editor.

For fixed membership, select items intentionally and give the collection a name that states its purpose. For dynamic membership, start with the smallest useful criterion. Inspect the returned items before adding another criterion; combining several uncertain fields can produce an empty or misleading result without revealing which field was responsible.

Test both inclusion and exclusion

Compare the returned items with the specimen set. If a short project video is included because its label matches, check that an unrelated item with the same duration does not enter accidentally. If a desired title is absent, inspect its metadata before weakening the rule for the whole collection.

An original acceptance note can state the intended members, excluded neighbours and the metadata dependency. It should distinguish a collection that has been checked from one that merely has a plausible name. If metadata changes later, repeat the membership check rather than assuming the original selection remains intact.

Give browsing order a separate decision

Membership and presentation order solve different problems. A collection with the right items can still be difficult to browse if its order does not serve the task. Inspect the available sorting choices and verify a beginning, middle and ending item through the intended client.

Document why the collection is manual or dynamic, and who maintains the underlying labels. That makes future changes explainable. No collection or Smart Rule was created for this guide, and the examples describe original planning rather than measured Channels behavior.

Questions answered

Does a Smart Rule stay fixed after it is created?

Channels describes dynamic membership as library content changes; metadata and rule maintenance therefore matter.

Can a collection’s name establish its contents?

No. Verify actual included and excluded items against its intended purpose.
