Channels personal videos: design groups before importing

Organize owned home videos in Channels DVR Server without applying a film or television matching workflow to unrelated recordings.

A player organises the experience

Choose a personal archive structure

Personal home videos often have no commercial title or episode identity to match. Begin with the way the household will look for them: an event, a year, a project or a family occasion. Choose one consistent grouping rule instead of relying on the camera’s automatically generated filenames.

Inventory a small sample before moving anything. Record the original path, the desired group, a meaningful title and whether the file is an original or an edited viewing copy. Keep originals separate from working copies. Changing presentation names should not make the only camera original difficult to identify later.

Use the correct Channels source type

Channels documents a Videos personal-media type for material that cannot be matched as ordinary movies or shows. Containing folders determine Video Groups and filenames provide initial video titles. The server’s Settings > Sources controls manage personal-media imports. These facts make folder planning consequential before a large scan.

Create a small source containing two clearly different groups, each with a couple of recognizable owned clips. Use names that describe their content without exposing unnecessary private information. A public title is not required simply because a home archive is being made easier to browse.

Review the group as a viewer

After importing, inspect both the group label and each clip’s title in the intended client. Open a representative file and confirm that the displayed title refers to the content you expected. A group full of thumbnails is not proof that the files are correctly labelled or that the client plays every format in the archive.

Use the sample to decide whether the grouping rule is helpful. A single group called Videos may be technically valid but unhelpful for several decades of material. Equally, a new group for every ten-second clip can make browsing cumbersome. The appropriate granularity comes from the archive’s actual use.

Make future imports predictable

Channels describes new videos inheriting properties from their associated group. Record which categories, genres or labels are intended to be shared before adding more recordings. Keep a separate catalogue note when details belong only to one event rather than every clip in a folder.

Once the sample is accepted, extend the same naming and grouping rule carefully. Preserve an inventory so revisions can be traced without guessing which files were imported. This is an independently authored organization method; no Channels account, server, client or personal-media import was tested here.

Questions answered

Should a family event be imported as a commercial movie?

Use the documented Videos route when automatic movie or show matching does not describe the material.

Does a folder label prove that every clip inside belongs there?

No. Inspect representative content and apply a grouping rule suited to the archive.
