Channels Library Visibility: organize browsing without assuming access control

Choose where personal library items appear in Channels and verify the result through ordinary browsing and collections.

A player organises the experience

State the browsing problem

Start with the result the household wants. Perhaps children’s programmes should have their own browsing area, or a large personal collection should be reached through a smaller curated view. These are presentation needs. Separately identify any actual confidentiality or account-access requirement.

Choose a few non-sensitive sample items to inspect before changing the full library. Record where each should appear: main browsing, the Kids section, both, or only a particular collection. This makes later observations comparable rather than relying on a general impression that a library looks tidier.

Apply the documented visibility meanings

Channels describes Library, Kids, Both and Hidden visibility states. Hidden items remain visible inside Library Collections. Keep that consequence attached to the choice; hiding an item from the main library does not establish that it cannot be reached through another ordinary surface.

Choose a state for one sample item and inspect the actual client in use. Do not change metadata and collection membership simultaneously, because those operations can make it harder to identify why the item appears or disappears. Retain the original state so the experiment is easily reversible.

Inspect the paths people actually use

Check the main library, the Kids section where relevant and any collection containing the item. Include the route used by the intended viewer, rather than relying entirely on the administrator’s web interface. Record which surface was inspected and whether the expected title appeared.

If an item remains available through a collection, compare that with the documented Hidden behavior before reimporting it or rebuilding the library. If the objective was confidentiality, pause the browsing-design exercise and review the system’s actual account and access model instead of assigning security meaning to a visual filter.

Leave a maintainable household rule

Write the selection policy in plain language. For example, a collection may intentionally expose hidden archive items as a curated doorway. That is useful only if future administrators understand why the main library and collection differ. Avoid recording sensitive titles in a note intended for public sharing.

After the sample behaves as intended, extend the same policy to other relevant items and recheck a representative view. No Channels client or access-control test was performed here. The practical contribution is a way to make browsing behavior explicit without treating visibility labels as permissions.

Questions answered

Does Hidden make an item inaccessible everywhere?

The documented behavior still exposes Hidden items inside Library Collections.

Should I use sample items first?

Yes. A small reversible comparison makes the intended browsing policy easier to verify.
