Decide who is hosting the collection
Emby has a server that organizes a personal media collection and clients that play it. Its server includes a web interface for management and playback. If someone has already invited you to their server, Emby’s quick start says to proceed to client installation; you do not need to create a second server merely to accept that invitation.
Identify your role before downloading. A host needs access to the media files; an invited viewer needs the administrator’s account instructions. A second, empty server will not contain the collection you intended to join.
Prepare and check a library when you are the host
Emby uses folder structure, filenames and the assigned library type to identify items. Its guidance separates movies, television, music and photos. Movie names should include the year; television files need useful season and episode information. Start with a small, clearly organized sample rather than renaming an entire collection during the first setup.
Install the server build appropriate to the host machine and complete its startup wizard. Check the sample in the server’s web interface before adding other viewing devices. An incorrect poster calls for an identification check. A missing file calls for a location or access check. Neither observation alone shows that the television application is faulty.
In the server dashboard’s Users area, use the plus control to add the viewer. Set the intended library access and save, then set that user’s password. Check playback as that viewer rather than assuming the administrator’s visible collection is available to every account.
Use the client and optional Connect route deliberately
Choose a client through Emby’s own download directory or use its web app with the credentials supplied by the server administrator. Verify the application for the actual platform, including its current feature and purchase terms. The existence of a server does not establish that every client feature is unlocked.
Emby Connect is optional. Its documented sequence is to create a Connect account, link the local server user to that account using the user’s email, then use the application’s PIN process. This helps the client locate a linked server without repeatedly entering its address. The server must still be the one you intended to access.
Connect does not relay your video through an Emby cloud streaming service. The viewing device connects to the server itself. A successful Connect sign-in therefore answers an account-discovery question; it does not prove that the server is reachable from the viewing device’s current network.
Report the stage that actually failed
Record whether the failure occurs before a server appears, while entering the server, when a library opens, or after a title starts. Include the client platform and version. That report helps an administrator investigate the relevant part of the installation without resetting accounts or rebuilding a library that already works elsewhere.
Questions answered
Must an invited viewer install Emby Server?
No. The invitation concerns an existing server. Install the appropriate client or use the web app, following that server administrator’s instructions.
Does an Emby Connect account include movies or channels?
Connect helps locate servers linked to your account. The personal media and the permissions to view it come from those servers.
Can Connect sign in successfully while playback still fails?
Yes. Server discovery, permission to a library, network reachability and playback are separate stages. Record which stage succeeds and which fails.
